August 30th (Monroe Ave., Rochester, NY) — Sprinkles
Today was a strange day with ups and downs. Not emotionally, but everything else flowed with undulation. Work: down in the morning, up in the afternoon. Play: up in the morning, down in afternoon, then up again in the evening. I could go on… but I won’t drag a dead horse in the rain.
I’ve been watching the films of Éric Rohmer. In particular, I’ve been watching his Six Moral Tales. They have been enticing and delightful. I used to say Godard was my favorite french new wave filmmaker when it comes to intellectualism, but now I have to put Rohmer in contention for that title. Godard is off the wall and extreme, which pushes the intellectualism into your face. His style grabs and screams at you even after you’ve noted it, but Rohmer does his intellectualism with a more subtle, almost pedestrian, touch. Its as if he is straddling the line between the logical and the emotional. That’s a feat in itself.
