Anywhere But Pittsburgh…

By RUDY!

…unintentionally, mind you. I have nothing against Pittsburgh, in fact, I’d like to visit and explore the Mysteries of Pittsburgh described in Chabon’s book (I quote myself, Made me wanna go to Pittsburgh, but not enough to force the issue.). Unfortunately, while my Fall Break Road Trip casts a lasso around Pittsburgh, I will avoid the city altogether. Next time.

Rough itinerary:

  • Toronto, ON - to see Montreal artist Anne Laure’s awesome-looking show and a performance featuring some rocking canadians (particularly Sandro Perri, who’s latest album has been on repeat for some time).
  • Cincinnati, OH - also known as Upper Northern Kentucky, where there is a particular museum that I must see to believe… there are so many plays on words in this list item and so many loose definitions. Only in America… details pending.
  • Williamsburg, VA - Colonial Willamsburg and Jamestown Thanksgiving Day bike tour led by me and attended by only me. Reminiscent of my Thanksgiving in Gettysburg.
  • Baltimore, MD - my first foray into Maryland, must see: Edgar Allen Poe’s grave!

I had a friend who disliked trips that were linear, i.e. back and forth along the same path. Even more detestable were curved linear trips that left open circles and semicircular paths, she insisted that trips be completed through circular paths. I think she would like this road trip. Not only is the path circular, but there are a lot of repeating themes and revisits along with a mix of novelty.

  2. PPS - That was for the Kentucky crack. How original! And WRONG!

  3. Take the Colonial Parkway for your biking! Very pretty. Parts of it get sketchy after dark, though.

  4. Jules, Kentucky crack sounds dirty, I’ll have no part of it.

Aimee, when you say sketchy, I think A-Ha’s Take On Me video, too bad I’ll be on the road by nightfall.

  6. If you call Cincinnati Kentucky again (or Kentucky Cincinnati, for that matter), I’ll kidnap you, drive you down the slimy Kentucky crack straight into the sweaty Kentucky crotch, and leave you there to fend for yourself!

  7. Roxane, thanks for the Cornell postcard, it was a delightful surprise!

  8. No Chicago, eh? Cool looking trip anyway. I recommend visiting Detroit proper (during the day). If you do make a stop inside Detroit, Avalon International Breads is a cool place.

  9. No Chicago this time (boo hoo). Have you heard/been to Moo Moo’s Bistro, it looks delicious, what about Detroit Evolution Laboratory, it looks good too, or Karmic Cafe, all of which are closed on Sunday! Inn Season Cafe is the only place open but it is out of the way. I take it downtown Detroit is deserted on the weekends?

  10. Kye says Detroit is pretty dead on the weekends. If you were heading through on a Saturday morning-afternoon, I’d also recommend Cass Cafe and Eastern Market (it’s a huge farmers market).
